Natural Resource Management & Environment Protection

Once abundantly available natural resources are now getting diminished due to the growing population pressure, multi-dimensional socio-economic development and its resultant exploitation and misuse of available resources by human beings. Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan (DJJS) is working towards re- establishing the linkage between man and environment to achieve long- term conservation of available resources.

Climate, water and air are the three fundamental factors that distinguish Earth from other planets and lead to origin of life on it. Snow-capped mountains and ice-bergs, flowing rivers, resource-rich forests, and diverse fauna are all the result of these three distinguishing factors. However, today these are diminishing at a fast pace and threaten the survival of life on planet Earth.

Human society, today, is marred by hard-pressing concerns of climate change, water crisis, air pollution, desertification etc. All the resources that were naturally available in abundance not long ago, are now getting diminished due to the growing population pressure and multi-dimensional socio-economic development. Although, causal factors of each of these problems might vary, all issues originate from the exploitation and misuse of available resources by human beings.

Throughout history, human beings have shared an intimate relationship with nature. Deriving his basic survival needs from nature, man felt responsible and shared a symbiotic relationship with it. However, as man paved the path towards scientific development, human connection with the environment transformed to a utilitarian one and nature was subjected to indiscriminate exploitation. With the result, today we are all experiencing the onslaught of a severe natural resources crunch.

Accounting for this disruption of harmony between human beings and environment, we at DJJS under our Natural Resource Management & Environment Protection Program, work towards re- establishing this linkage to achieve long- term conservation of available resources. This program is unique in providing solutions to these pressing concerns through individual action.

The prime thematic areas of work are:

Water conservation

Energy conservation

Climate change issues

The philosophy underpinning interventions in each of these areas is promoting eco- friendly and sustainable lifestyle changes. These are low investment and doable changes most individuals are aware of but, unable to relate them to issues at the macro level. Individual actions lead to ignorant and wasteful lifestyles. At DJJS, we advocate simple actions that are usually ignored by most in our everyday lives, the results of which have caused environmental havoc around us.

In addition DJJS has been actively undertaking action research projects with active participation of local communities to address specific environmental concerns in specific pockets across the country.

The current focus of the programme is on advocating lifestyle changes through the spiritual platform. Capacity building and orientation of volunteers and staff to take the environment conservation messages to masses has been taken up as the first step in the programme. Parallely, we are working on a research study to account the household water and energy leakages in various states across India. DJJS successfully completed GOI funded “Water and Life” project on creating awareness regarding watershed management in hilly region of Pithoragarh in 2007. A paper on the project was presented at 3rd Water Environment Partnership in Asia Forum organised from 23rd to 24th Oct.'08 in Malaysia by Ministry of the Environment, Japan & Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment, Malaysia.
